With or Without the Sun
‘With or Without the Sun‘ is the manifestation of SixtyEight Art Institute's ongoing curatorial research into the history of the essay-film in relation to Japan, undertaken by Staffan Boije af Gennäs and Christopher Sand-Iversen. The second iteration of the exhibition ‘With or Without the Sun‘, entitled Essay-film and the Image of Japan, was held in collaboration with the Japan-Filmfest Hamburg in May 2019. It formed part of the festival programme and was hosted by Enfants Artspace, Hamburg.
Originally held in 2018 as part of SixtyEight’s Dictionary of Advanced Difference exhibition programme, ‘With or Without the Sun‘, Chris Marker, the film-essay, and the meeting with Japan explored the development and legacy of the essayistic tradition of filmmaking, both in the west and in Japan.
The emphasis in the second iteration of the exhibition was shifted towards the Japanese aspect of the project, with the inclusion of two Japanese films not present in the first version, Pyuupiru 2001-2008 by Daishi Matsunaga and Asagi Kimura’s Hizume.
Both exhibitions were complemented by works of photographers Fabian Hammerl and Jan Søndergaard from their Japanese series.
Fabian Hammerl's installation ‘You are a person who really lives very far away./貴方は本当にとても遠くに住んでいる人です。‘ is composed of images from his ‘Things As They‘ series and photographs taken during his residency in Osaka in the Winter of 2018/19, and was arranged with reference to the compositional approach in the Overflow installation of Japanese photographer Takuma Nakahira.
